Caltrans to Begin Installation of Temporary Traffic Signal on Pacific Coast Highway in Wilmington
Electrical work on will require daytime work and lane reductions
WILMINGTON — Caltrans (District 7) will begin installing a temporary traffic signal at the intersection of Drumm Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1), in Wilmington on Monday, June 29. Work is expected to be completed by September 18.
Construction will primarily consist of electrical work, requiring daytime closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Overnight closures will occur during the weeks of August 10–15 and August 17–22, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Traffic flow in both directions of Pacific Coast Highway be maintained throughout the traffic signal installation, with lane reductions implemented to allow crews to safely complete the work.
The traffic signal installation is part of a broader effort to improve local infrastructure that will be used or impacted by detour traffic during the full closure of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, scheduled to begin on November 1, 2026.
A critical infrastructure project totaling $752.8 million, the Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement will require partial and full closures of the bridge over the next two years. More information is available at the project website. Skanska-CEC Joint Venture is the general contractor for the project.
Due to weather or operational factors, the construction schedule is subject to change, including dates and times, the number of closures, and other details. Drivers should anticipate delays in their commute and use Caltrans Quickmap to review current traffic conditions before traveling. Caltrans reminds drivers to exercise increased caution near the closure and Slow for the Cone Zone.
